50 Years Ago This Week – 1973

Fifty years ago this week in 1973, the Minster Wildcats picked up a Midwest Athletic Conference victory on the gridiron by easily downing the Ansonia Tigers by a final of 30-0. The Wildcats struck first in the opening period when Dan Moorman scored on a seven-yard run. Cork Poeppelman’s twopoint conversion gave their team an 8-0 command, which increased to 14-0 early in the second period, following a Poeppelman touchdown run. Later in the stanza, Pat Reilly pounded in from one yard and Poeppelman’s conversion run gave the home team a 22-0 cushion at intermission. The final score of the night came in the fourth quarter when Dennis Schmiesing crossed the goal line from 10 yards out and Dan Westerheide added the conversion to give Minster the 30-point victory and move to 3-4 on the campaign.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1998

Twenty-five years ago this week in 1998, the New Bremen football team moved to 5-2 on the campaign and 2-2 in the Midwest Athletic Conference with a conference triumph over Fort Recovery by a final of 8-0. The Cardinals first lit up the scoreboard in the second quarter when a Fort Recovery punt sailed out of the back of the endzone to help put the home team in charge, 2-0. A few minutes later, quarterback Jeremy Fiser found Matt Hudson open for a 43-yard touchdown strike. The PAT was off the mark, but New Bremen maintained an 8-0 lead at the halftime break and eventually held on to win by the same score.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2013

Ten years ago this week in 2013, the St. Marys Roughriders improved to 4-5 on the football season and 3-5 in the Western Buckeye League with a 34-14 victory over the winless Van Wert Cougars at Skip Baughman Stadium in St. Marys. In the victory, St. Marys’ senior D.J. Manning became the school’s single-season rushing leader as he finished the evening with 146 yards and three touchdowns. He needed only 141 yards to break the record of 1809 yards in a season set by Bo Frye in 2004.
